I was watching the first half of the second season of Fox’s hit TV series “Prison Break” with my parents in the living room the other night.
First of all, they’re Asian. What with the idiosyncrasies of the English language, they find the dialog difficult to grasp. That said, they are nevertheless drawn in by the compelling tale of Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows.
It’s not a rare sight, when watching American TV series with my family, when I pause the DVD to explain to my parents what just happened. The gist isn’t always enough.
Because my mother doesn’t have a firm hold on English, the raising of guns and the frenzied dialogue in particular scenes are enough to throw her off. Actions as these illustrate the intensity of the situation, and are the only factors she can focus on since the dialogue is all Greek to her.

This is why dubs can come in handy.

As a TV fan and a female, I can appreciate “Prison Break” for multiple reasons.
1) Michael Scofield is a genius, in the classical sense of the word. After a while you have to give him kudos.
2) The series contains intertwined themes of action, romance, brotherhood, family, betrayal, friendship, etc. Something at the table for everyone.
3) Wentworth Miller(the lead actor) is HOT. Not only is he exceptionally handsome, he’s an intellectual in a business where his kind are rare. (Just sayin’)
4) The characters are well-developed. There are some you love, some you hate, and some you love to hate.
5) If you try to guess what will happen next, you will find that you can’t.
6) Sucre has been Michael’s man since the beginning.
7) T-Bag!!! You gotta love this scumbag and what he contributes to the story.

TVB will be airing “Man in Charge” 《幕後大老爺》next Monday. The series stars Kenneth Ma, Kate Tsui, Leila Tong, and Matthew Ko. The cast members attended an event to promote the series. Kate and Kenneth wore traditional Chinese bride and groom costumes. When the press asked the pair to kiss for the camera, Kenneth and Kate puckered their lips and pretended to kiss, drawing laughter from all present.

In “Man in Charge,” Kate has numerous martial arts sequences. She hopes that the ratings will break the record of her previous series, “Speech of Silence.” Kenneth also hoped that “Man in Charge” will duplicate the success of “Speech of Silence” which pulled in 30 points in ratings.

Kenneth will be involved in a love triangle with Kate and Leila Tong in “Man in Charge.” He joked that he was a true player. Reporters then asked whether rumored girlfriends, Kate or Nancy Wu possessed better dancing skills. Kenneth did not defend Nancy, “I do not know, both ladies have two different styles. Maybe Kate dances better! (Was this because Kenneth has seen Nancy dance too often?) “I have only seen Nancy dance when we partnered on the dancing program. She doesn’t dance for me to see on a normal basis!”

The theme song will be performed by Kenneth and Matthew Ko. Although Kenneth does not intend to enter the music industry, he does not mind collecting additional income from stage performances or participating in a TVB produced album.
